Adoption has gained popularity in the past two decades, with 15% more adoptions today than in 1990. While 30% of people consider the possibility of adoption, only two in every 100 Americans actually do adopt a child. Even so, thousands of children from the U.S. and across the world are welcomed into warm homes and loving families each year in America. Understanding adoption is the best way to decide if the process is the right fit for you and your family. Take some time to look at this infographic about adoption from one of the largest international nonprofit adoption agencies in the United States. If you know anyone considering the advantages of adoption, feel free to share this interesting information with them!

Adopting a child is the beginning of a lifelong journey for you and your family. Once the process has been completed, however, you and your child will have to deal with the feelings and realities that come with adoption. Understanding and preparing for life after adoption can help you and your child through the entire adoption process.
Share the Experience Early and Often
Even if your adopted child is just an infant or toddler, talk about adoption from day one. Hiding the fact that a child is adopted is not conducive to the open communication that is especially important for adopted children and adoptive parents. Adopted children may experience feelings of fear or loss even if they cannot vocalize these feelings. Talking to your child about the adoption experience from a young age establishes a rapport of trust and love within your family.
Encourage Multi-Cultural Understanding
If you have adopted internationally, consider the value of moving to a multi-cultural area or sending your child to a school known for its diversity. This can help lessen the impact of living with parents that may not share visible cultural traits. Answer any questions your child has honestly and openly, and encourage him to take part in traditions that encompass both his and your own heritage.
Be Flexible
Understand that every child is different, and that some require more special care than others. Especially if you choose to adopt an older child, remember that the process is as challenging for the child as it is for you. The consistency of your commitment and love are important during this time, as you teach your child that he can rely on your caring as a parent when he may have had poor experiences with his biological family.
Choosing to adopt a child is only the first step in a journey of understanding and learning.
